What is Homeopathy?

Did You Know That The Homeopath Dr. Alan Campbell Was The Founder of The Adelaide Women’s & Children’s Hospital?

Homoeopathy arrived on our shores almost with the first settlers. The earliest activity was recorded in the 1850’s. Homoeopathy was often more popular than conventional medicine in the 1800’s when leaching and bloodletting were common.

Homoeopathic hospitals were opening their doors throughout the country. Melbourne, Sydney, and Tasmania had their own busy hospitals. The two systems of medicine (orthodox medicine and homoeopathy) were often in tight competition with one another.

In SA the Germans in the Barossa Valley had strong ties with homoeopathy. They treated their livestock and themselves successfully with homoeopathic remedies. Evidence can still be found in the German Museum in Tanunda, where books and remedy chests are displayed.

In 1867, during two major epidemics where many lives were lost the first Adelaide Homoeopathic Dispensary was set up to provide medical aid for the poor. The Scot Dr. Allan Campbell, a true health reformer and homoeopath began practicing with others in this dispensary, which was the only place the poor could be treated as out patients.

In 1876 the homoeopath Campbell met up with a group of upper class women to discuss the establishment of a children’s hospital in Adelaide. Two years later the Adelaide Children’s Hospital (now known as Women’s and Children’s Hospital) opened it’s doors to the youngsters of South Australia.

The hospital was attended by three homoeopathic doctors and three allopathic (orthodox medicine) doctors.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homoeopathy is a holistic, gentle and scientific system of medicine developed by the German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann. Within this healing method the symptoms of the whole individual, not only the symptoms of the disease are taken in consideration in order to find the single homoeopathic remedy. This process eventually raises a person’s immune response to overcome the disease.

Homoeopathy uses the law of similars, meaning that what could make a healthy person sick, could also cure a sick person, provided that the symptoms agree. The common onion for example may produce burning eyes and a runny nose, but the same substance homoeopathically prepared will help a person with similar symptoms that occur in hay fever.

Homoeopathic remedies are highly diluted natural substances consisting of mineral, plant or animal secretions. These remedies are prepared in homoeopathic pharmacies in such a way that they are devoid of all chemical toxicity.

In my clinic I see a lot of women and children having been diagnosed by their doctor with conditions which require life-long or severe medication. If you are searching for an alternative and compassionate personalised treatment based on results Homeopathy can be the answer.

We all deserve enabling, respectful and informative healthcare so we can make the right decisions for our health or the health of our children.

Homeopathy is based on Nature’s law: like cures like. Classical homeopathy is a highly scientific, logical, safe and effective method of treatment. The homeopathic remedy is given in a minute dose, stimulating the body’s own healing response which leads to long lasting improvement. Homeopathy is well known for the treatment of chronic illness, but it is also effective in mental and emotional disorders, and even acute diseases respond quickly and subside without side effects.

Individualisation

In classical homoeopathy individualization is law. Every migraine sufferer might have a different cause for the ailment. It could have been an inherited problem, or occurred after a loss or a grief, or after head injury or even as a side-effect after medication. The causation is most important and explains why perhaps five people suffering with the same problem might all get better with different remedies.

The difference with other forms of treatment is that homoeopathy does not treat the disease but the person who is sick. By strengthening the individual’s constitution many complaints will vanish in time, even chronic diseases. Have you ever wondered why you got a cold and the person you are sitting next to at work did not? The answer lies in an individual susceptibility and this is the reason why individualization is of such importance

A classical homoeopath takes into account a range of physical, emotional, lifestyle induced and inherited symptoms to find the right remedy which suits the individual.

Homoeopathy – Only A Placebo Effect?

This argument is as old as homoeopathy itself. The fact is that now, 200 years after the discovery of homoeopathy, many international studies have been conducted, which prove the efficiency of homoeopathy. Homoeopathy has been used worldwide. Remedies can be purchased in almost every pharmacy in Europe.

Given that animals and small children respond extremely well to homeopathic treatment, this alone disputes the idea of a “placebo effect”, since the success or failure of their treatment is not suggested..

Through the scientific studies esp. in Europe a red thread can be observed throughout the history of homoeopathy. In around two thirds of all homoeopathic treated cases the treatment is successful. For example in a German study a double blind test was conducted to treat 60 migraine patients with homoeopathic remedies or placebos. The result showed clearly that homoeopathic treatment was clearly superior to the placebo treatment.

The founder of homoeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann documented his cases very thoroughly. In 1813 he treated 183 patients during a Typhoid epidemic, only one of his patients died. Whereas only 50% of the patients treated with the conventional medicine of the time survived.

Homoeopathy has shown its effectiveness since its discovery. Many documented cases give evidence that homoeopathy works – but how it works has yet to be discovered.
